Measures to prevent the onset and exacerbation of symptoms

  • Protect yourself from the sun. Ultraviolet rays can trigger symptoms. Wear clothes that cover your skin, a hat and sunglasses when you're outside. Use sunscreen on exposed skin to direct sunlight. Obviously it is better to avoid the sun when it is at its zenith, that is to say, from 11 am to 15 pm.
  • Consult your doctor before taking any medication. Do not take OTC medication without your doctor's recommendations. These can cause side effects. It is also the case of prescription drugs such as antibiotics. Also avoid products (including natural products) that stimulate the immune system. Note also that taking birth control pills containing estrogen increases the risk of a surge. The pills which contain low doses of estrogen cause less problems. Talk to your doctor.
  • Practice a relaxation technique. Considering that stress can exacerbate the symptoms of lupus. It is important to understand the importance of good stress management as a preventive measure. The trick is to choose a technique that you like.
  • Be sure to sleep. The National Institutes of Health in the United States recommends to enjoy nights of sleep lasting at least 8 to 10 hours to help minimize the pain caused by lupus. Indeed, the first weapon against joint pain would simply rest. There are several techniques to help relax and promote sleep (breathing exercises, mental relaxation techniques, meditation, etc..).
  • Adopt a balanced diet. Some people have noticed that poor nutrition contributes to the onset of relapses. Be careful with alcohol, known to precipitate symptoms.
  • Stop smoking. While smoking is bad for health, people with lupus have more reasons to stop smoking. First, smoking increases the oxidation reactions in the body, causing toxic waste. However, the organization of people with lupus is already overloaded with toxins from the autoimmune reactions. In addition, certain medications (including prednisone) make more risk and long-term heart problems. It is therefore likely to turn into not smoking because the link between smoking and cardiovascular disease is well demonstrated.
  • Exercise regularly. In addition to improving the well-being, regular exercise prevents outbreaks of symptoms. Vary the types of exercises to maximize profit: stretches to relieve stiffness of joints, weight training to maintain muscle strength and endurance sport (brisk walking, swimming, cycling) to restore the energy and improve cardiovascular health.
  • Protect your joints.
