        Lupus is an autoimmune disease where chronic immune system attacks the body's connective tissues. The Latin name lupus, or wolf, was chosen to allude to the destructive, invasive and mysterious disease. Lupus mainly affects women of childbearing age. It is considered a form of arthritis because it causes inflammation of the joints. However, the impact of this disease reflects in the the entire body through a variety of symptoms that can seem insurmountable.

        The reasons are still unknown - perhaps a set of environmental, hormonal and genetic factors- the body produces antibodies that attack it's own healthy tissues. The immune system is a complex network of organs, tissues, cells and factors in the blood. Usually, it protects the individual against the disease. These autoimmune reactions can be very harmful for the body and cause significant inflammatory reactions.

        Lupus is characterized by alternating symptomatic periods and periods of remission. During outbreaks of symptoms, the disease exacerbate, physical manifestations multiply and laboratory blood tests show abnormalities. Then, the symptoms gradually diminish and disappear. Periods of remission may last for weeks, months and even years. Although it is a chronic illness, most people with lupus are not constantly sick throughout their lives.

        A viral infection, stress, overwork and the fact of pregnancy or childbirth can trigger lupus by a still unknown mechanism (which does not mean they are the cause). In addition, some medications used to treat another illness can cause symptoms of lupus. They disappear when the person stops taking his medication.
