What are the major signs?

The disease usually begins slowly with new symptoms during a period of several weeks, months or even years. Nonspecific complaints such as fatigue or a feeling of ill-being are common in the initial period. Many children with LES had a prolonged or intermittent fever, weight loss and appetite loss. Over time, damage to several organs will occur in many children. The skin and mouth are frequently affected by rashes or have photosensitivity (that is to say that sun exposure causes a rash), ulceration of the mouth or nose. The typical butterfly rash touching your nose and cheeks is observed in a third or half of the children. This rash is also called "wolf." Sometimes there is a hair loss that can cause alopecia. The fingers become red and blue, sometimes white when exposed to cold (Raynaud's phenomenon). Other symptoms may include swelling and joint pain, muscle aches, anemia, easy bleeding, headaches, seizures and rarely pain in the chest. Impairment of the kidney is often present in varying degrees of severity. The most common symptoms of renal disease are elevated blood pressure, protein in urine and the occurrence of edema affecting particularly the feet, legs and eyelids.
